Sujet de recherche : Ideology and Rhetoric of the Bolivarian Revolution : Discourse Analysis of Political and Cultural texts of Hugo Chávez

Présentation du sujet de recherche : The election of Hugo Chávez as the president of Venezuela in 1998 is widely regarded as the beginning of a “Pink Tide” in Latin America. Left and centre-left governments came into power and new cultural discourses came into being. The aim of the research is to analyse the relationship between rhetorical elements and ideology in the political and cultural texts of the South-American statesman.

A discourse analysis will be carried out by using a method that combines insights from established theoretical frameworks from Literary Studies on the one hand – specifically Amossy’s Argumentative Analysis and Leerssen’s studies on “national character” within Imagology – and Critical Discourse Analysis on the other.

The first part of the dissertation offers a description of the socio-political events in Venezuela within the context of recent Latin-American history. The second part describes the specific theoretical and methodological framework for discourse analysis in this project. Finally, the third and main part of the thesis offers a detailed discourse analysis of the text corpus. In the concluding section of this part, we will confront the narrative developed by Chávez with the dominant narrative on globalisation within the context of a struggle for (Gramscian) hegemony.
